How to Set iPhone Charging Limit to 80% (Battery Health Guide)
Lithium-ion batteries degrade faster when kept at full charge for extended periods. By limiting your iPhone’s maximum charge to 80-85%, you reduce stress on the battery cells and may extend their lifespan. This can be helpful if you keep your iPhone for several years or have consistent access to charging throughout the day.
Check Your iPhone Compatibility
You can choose granular 5% increments (80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, 100%).
If you have an iPhone 14 or earlier, you can only use Optimized Battery Charging, which uses on-device machine learning to learn daily charging routines and delays charging past 80% until you need your device.
How to Set a Charging Limit
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap Battery
- Select Charging
- Tap Charge Limit
- Choose your preferred limit: 80%, 85%, 90%, 95%, or 100%
Your iPhone will stop charging when it reaches the selected percentage.
When to Temporarily Override Your Limit
If you need a full charge for travel or a long day away from chargers:
- Go to Settings > Battery > Charging > Charge Limit and set the picker to 100%
- Tap Allow Until Tomorrow to temporarily charge to 100% (returns to your set limit at 6:00 a.m.)
Alternatively, you can permanently change your limit back to 100% by selecting Set Limit to 100% in the Charge Limit menu.
Choosing the Right Limit
In my experience, many users find these approaches helpful:
- 80-85%: May help maximize battery longevity if you charge frequently or keep your iPhone for several years
- 90-95%: Balanced approach offering more daily capacity while still reducing battery stress
- 100%: Use if you regularly need full battery capacity
I typically recommend starting with 85% and adjusting based on your daily usage patterns. If you find yourself needing more capacity, move up to 90%. If you rarely drain below 40%, try 80%.
